Watch a short video about Camp Kara

Children and teens who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives deserve the opportunity to grieve in a supportive and safe environment. Far too often, our society fails to understand, acknowledge or support their grief. Our services are guided by the following beliefs:

  • Grief is a natural reaction to loss for children and teens as well as adults
  • The duration and intensity of grief are unique for each individual
  • Caring and acceptance assist the healing process

We recognize both the universality and the uniqueness of each family member’s grieving process and experience. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible to connect you and your family to the services that best meet your needs.

Peer Group Support

Adult family members can participate in specific peer support or drop-in groups. Ongoing grief support groups are also offered for children ages 5 to 11, middle schoolers, and teens. These bi-monthly meetings include concurrent facilitated support groups for the accompanying parents or caregivers and allow an opportunity to discuss and share experiences with grief. Parents or caregivers of younger children (1 – 4) are also welcome to participate. Learn More

1:1 Peer Support

In addition to participating in specific or drop-in groups, parents or family caregivers can receive individual support from a trained volunteer peer counselor.

Camp Kara

Camp Kara is a free bereavement camp for youth ages 6-17 who have experienced the death of a significant person in their lives. Children and teens come together for one weekend to participate in traditional fun camp activities and peer support focused grief activities. Campers are supported throughout the weekend by Kara’s highly trained volunteers and staff.

Since 2008 Kara has operated an annual bereavement camp dedicated to creating a safe and caring space for grieving children and teens to share experiences around grief and loss, acquire coping skills, and gain support from making connections with peers.
