Grief impacts everyone. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model, one in 18 children in California will experience the death of a parent or sibling by age 18.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bay Area averaged more than 50,000 deaths annually. The demand for Kara’s services has increased 42% over the past four years. In addition, the pandemic has required that Kara grow in its service model to include telehealth one-to-one counseling services as well as online grief support groups, crisis support to first responders and community agencies, and virtual volunteer training programs.

The need for grief support in the Bay Area is increasing. In 2021, over 1,000 adults and children will benefit from Kara’s peer-based grief support and more than 2,000 community members will receive timely crisis support and grief training. Over 800 individuals and families will be comforted through grief consultations. In addition to this organic growth, the COVID-19 crisis has disproportionately affected the Latinx community, requiring additional resources and support for Spanish speaking children, adults, and families as well as school districts in underserved neighborhoods.
